The Indiana Youth Tour is taken each year in mid-June to provide area youth with the opportunity to travel to our nation's capital to experience firsthand how our government operates, learn about the complexities of the electric utility industry, discover the unique characteristics of cooperative business enterprise, as well as meet and work with hundreds of peers from throughout the United States. The trip also gives students the opportunity to see our nation’s rich history, visit famous national monuments and government buildings.
What all takes place on the trip?
Students participating in the trip will visit the Flight 93 Memorial, Gettysburg Battlefield, Arlington National Cemetery, National Museum of the Marine Corps and Smithsonian museums. The students will also tour the Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Franklin D. Roosevelt memorials, meet friends from across the country and much more.
The Indiana Youth Tour students will also participate in a youth event hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and spend a day on Capitol Hill, where they will have an opportunity to meet with Indiana’s congressional delegation to ask questions and share their thoughts on a variety of timely issues.
All expenses from Indianapolis (meals, lodging and scheduled events) will be paid for by Noble REMC, as the sponsoring electric cooperative. Travel to and from Indianapolis and any other incidental expenses incurred by the participant will be their responsibility.
Who's eligible, and how are applicants chosen?
To be eligible for the youth tour, the applicant's parents or guardians must be members of Noble REMC, and the student must be a junior in high school and enroll for their senior year. Applicants shall also have demonstrated participation and leadership in their school and community through organizations, committees and other activities.
Selection of a youth tour candidate will be based on the candidate's application and their school and community participation. Applicants will also be required to write a short essay (no more than two pages, double-spaced). The topic of the essay will be the importance of community involvement. Noble REMC takes an active role in the communities we serve, so we ask, “Why do you think it’s important for companies and individuals to be involved in their community?”
